Private hike to Grand Brekketind was rarely visited by other than locals before the tv-show 71 degrees north showed it off in 2020! It´s a unique tour with multiple mountaineering elements in the middle of the Sunnmøre Alps. We only offer this tour with the highest safety: 2:1 participant: guide - ratio.
The trip takes about 9-12 hours from Liasætra parking in Stranda valley.
As this is a long trip that requires climbing and crossing glaciers, we have limited the number of participants to 2 guests per guide. This is to give the guide a good margin on safety in relation to time and weather, this means that the chance of reaching the summit is significantly greater than if there were more guests per guide.
It is approximately 1300 altitude meters and a total of 16km round trip. But a lot of the time goes to the climbing itself. We start early in the morning, at 7 a.m.
It is possible to rent simple accommodation in a mountain hut at Liasaetra via us and costs NOK 500 per person per night. A food basket can be arranged for an additional cost. There is no electricity or toilet in the mountain hut, but there is fireplace for heating. If you want to stay in the hut at Liasætra, this must be clarified in advance when making a reservation.
Prices 2024
1-2 pax 8,000 NOK
3-4 pax 12,000 NOK

The trip required good physical shape, you should manage up to 20km with a daypack of approx 10kg. You should have some experience with steep terrain and the use of ice axes and crampons. It is not required, but recommended that you have some experience with climbing. The climbing and top ridge is exposed to heights and we do not recommend people with a paralyzing fear of heights to participate. Youth between the age of 15-18 can be accompanied with an adult/guardian.
The trip starts at Liasætra in Stranda, here is a GoogleMaps link for driving directions: Liasætra, Stranda
There is a farmroad we have to use to get to Liasætra that the landowner charges 25NOK to use.
Private group of 2 people; 6000 NOK.
The guide will always put the group's safety as a priority. This means that weather, wind, and other conditions will always provide guidance as to whether the planned route can be completed or not. Should the weather be too bad, we as the organizer will cancel, and you will be offered to move the trip or a full refund. Remember to read through our booking conditions and safety rules as this is automatically part of the agreement when you book a trip.
16.5km, 1359 altitude meters, 9-12 hours
2 pitches of climbing, 1 steep snow gully, and 1 rappel.
We start at the trailhead Liasætra in the Habostad valley at 0700.
Liasætra is a few kilometers by car up a farm road from Engeset in Stranda. From Liasætra we hike at a good pace up Habostadvalley for about 5km and 250 vertical meters. Habostad is one of the most beautiful valleys in Sunnmøre, surrounded by peaks over 1500 meters asl, so we are among Sunnmøre's giants. After about 5km up the trail, there is a large rock that marks the best place to cross the river we have been following. We cross the river, and depending on the water level, we may have to get our shoes off and cross it barefeet.
After crossing the river we move up the valley another 1 km to the foot of Store Brekketind. Here we have lunch and recharge our batteries. It´s almost 800 altitude meters left to the summit, but only a 2.5km distance so it will be quite steep going for the rest of the day. We follow a faint sheep trail a few hundred meters until it disappears into a rockfield followed by snow and then the glacier.
At the edge of the glacier around 1300 masl, we get geared up with the glacier equipment and cross the Brekketind glacier followed by a steep snow gully of up to 30 degrees steep to a saddle between Grand Brekketind and Little Brekketind. Here, we climb using ropes up the last 50 meters of Grand Brekketind's north side where the top ridge begins. Well up on the ridge, we carefully scramble the last 30 meters to the summit. After a picture and congratulations on the summit, we reverse the whole process, but instead of climbing, we will rappel down to the saddle again and snow conditions depending we downclimb or rappel down the steep snow gully.
