The trip's goal is to live close to nature, explore the great untouched wilderness, become a safer winter explorer, and last but not least; excitement and mastery. The trip goes off marked trails, and into the largest untouched wilderness area south of Trondheim. We in Ræin are passionate about facilitating good experiences off the beaten track. There is something unique about visiting a place that few people have visited. The impressions are greater and the experiences stronger.
The expedition takes 5 days beginning and ending at the Billingen Guesthouse and covers 55km. Compared to our ski trip in the Tafjord mountain range where we sleep in huts, we will on this expedition be completely self-reliant using toboggans to carry our equipment, food, and lodging(tents). We travel around and up to the highest peak in Reinheimen National Park which rises to above 2000 meters above sea level. A 2000-meter peak is considered among the highest in Norway and this is one of the least visited.
Raein specializes in adventures within the Reinheimen National Park and Tafjord mountain range and the guide on these trips is highly familiar with the terrain, almost on par with the wild Reindeer that lives there, and provides an extra layer of safety as well as an immense amount of local knowledge.
This is the trip for the adventurous explorer. The trip requires basic skiing skills, and mastering long days of activity in a winter environment. This is not a beginner trip. The age limit on the trip is 15+ years accompanied by a parent/parents, otherwise 18 years. It is an advantage if you have skied before and are in good physical shape. It is not a requirement that you have used a toboggan before but having used backcountry skis is a requirement. We will both go through the handling of the sled together and help each other. The same applies to setting up winter tents and using cooking equipment, you should have some experience with winter camping. The days are moderately demanding in length, but the weather and conditions will guide the accessibility and be decisive for how demanding the trip will be.
First aid kit:
This trip is happening in Reinheimen National Park with permission from the board of Reinheimen National Park.During the trip, we must always take into account the wild reindeer in the area, and move accordingly as to not disturb them. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to observe the mountain ranglers from a distance.
The route does not have phone reception, but the guide have an satellite phone that can be used for emergencies.
To get to Billingen we recommend the bus from Otta/Oslo/Trondheim. There is also a parking lot at Billingen if you come by car.
The guide will always put our guests safety as first priority. If any external factors or weather conditions may put the group at risk, he/she is allowed to change original route/turn around. Please read trough our general safety rules at the bottom of our page before joining a trip.
1 week before the tour we will have a digital trip-planning meeting over the internet. Here we will go through the packing list, the route, and introduce ourselves so we get to know each other a bit before the trip. The idea is to give you a chance to ask questions and make last-minute adjustments if necessary and have more ownership to the trip.
We meet at the parking by Billingen at 10.00(AM), see this Google link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/vn2Dtg...)
Introductions, last-minute packing, and getting ready to head out. We head northwest into the National Park towards Camp Golden Gate near the backcountry hut Tverrådalshut. We will keep a slow pace so we can familiarize ourselves with our equipment and with the group.
We start this day by gaining some elevation and getting up to the Torsflyene plateau. During the crossing of this plateau, we will see another backcountry hut called Torsbu. Here we can have lunch inside the hut if the weather is steering us in that direction.. After lunch we head east and to the lake Dørtjønnin, which will be frozen and not visible at this time of year but provides and nice flat spot to set up our camp for night 2. This day we really get into the heart of the national park and the expedition feeling really start to set in.
This day is all about getting into position for the summit attempt of Gråhøe 2, the neighboring peak to Gråhøe that rises to 2014m asl. We leave dørtjønning lake and aim for the saddle between Digerkampen Mountain and the glacier, this is where we will set our camp for the night. This puts us right by the least steep ascent up on the glacier for our summit attempt tomorrow.
Day 3 is not a very long day and we can take an easy morning and a slow pace to save energy for the big day tomorrow.
We ascend to the top of the glacier and cross it to the saddle between the Gråhøe and Gråhøe 2 mountains. At this saddle we leave the toboggans and ascend the peak. Thereafter we return to the toboggans, take them with us, and head down into Skarvedalen valley where we will set our last camp close to the Skarvedalshut.
10km flat and downhill leaves us with a nice last day with a few challenging steeper downhill sections at the end before we reach the parking lot. The aim is to reach the parking lot no later than 16.00
