Distance: 16.5km | 1359 meters of elevation | 9-12 timer
- 2 pitches of climbing, 1 steep snow gully, and 1 rappel.
We meet at the trailhead Liasætra in the Habostad valley at 07.00 am.
Liasætra is a few kilometers by car up a farm road from Engeset in Stranda. From Liasætra we hike at a good pace up Habostadvalley for about 5km and 250 vertical meters. Habostad is one of the most beautiful valleys in Sunnmøre, surrounded by peaks over 1500 meters asl, so we are among Sunnmøre's giants. After about 5km up the trail, there is a large rock that marks the best place to cross the river we have been following. We cross the river, and depending on the water level, we may have to get our shoes off and cross it barefeet.
After crossing the river we move up the valley another 1 km to the foot of Store Brekketind. Here we have lunch and recharge our batteries. It´s almost 800 altitude meters left to the summit, but only a 2.5km distance so it will be quite steep going for the rest of the day. We follow a faint sheep trail a few hundred meters until it disappears into a rockfield followed by snow and then the glacier.
At the edge of the glacier around 1300 masl, we get geared up with the glacier equipment and cross the Brekketind glacier followed by a steep snow gully of up to 30 degrees steep to a saddle between Grand Brekketind and Little Brekketind. Here, we climb using ropes up the last 50 meters of Grand Brekketind's north side where the top ridge begins. Well up on the ridge, we carefully scramble the last 30 meters to the summit. After a picture and congratulations on the summit, we reverse the whole process, but instead of climbing, we will rappel down to the saddle again and snow conditions depending we down climb or rappel down the steep snow gully.
Distance: 12km | 1156 meters of elevation | ca 9-10 timer
- 4 pitches of climbing, ridge traverse and down Mohns gulley and Molladalen.
We meet at the grocery store Coop in Barstadvik at 7.00 in the morning, from here we drive up a farm road to Melbøsætra where the trailhead to Molladalen (read; Molla-valley) is located. It is about 5km and 500 meters of elevation gain up to Molladalen on a nice path. At the lake Storevatnet in the middle of the Molladalen we take a break and take in the majestic pinnacles and steep faces of Molladalen. This valley is famous for its climbing. It has been said that if Disneyland would make a miniature version of the french alps they would use this valley as a mold.
After the break, we walk along the lake to its far end and then start a steep and at times exposed ascent through the labyrinth of pinnacles to the saddle between Holtanna pinnacle and Mohns Peak. This is where the climbing begins, we rope up, do necessary buddy check and then set off up the route. The guide will lead all the pitches and bring you up on toprope. The climbing is grade 4 (YDS 5.7) which is manageable for almost anyone, however, the exposure and height may be the biggest challenge for some. There is especially one extra exciting part where you have to step around and up a steep arete. This is also the finest view during the climb. It is also right before this that we reach the famous sofa, a rock formation that looks just like a sofa.
Once we have mastered the airy step around the arete, we have 2 easy pitches to the top. From the top we enjoy the views and scramble out the ridge to the north. Here we will reach the famous pinnacle "Bladet". A thin blade-like 15-meter high pinnacle. The guide sets up a toprope on this and you get a chance to stand on the top of this pinnacle and get a pretty amazing photo with the fjord in the backdrop.
The climbing for the day is done and we have to get down to the car, we scramble down a gulley/colouir called "Mohns renne". It is steep and we have to tread carefully, its already been a long day and we don't want to make it longer by slipping or spraining an ankle. When we get down the gulley we are back down at the lake and get back on the trail we walked in. We follow the trail all the way back to cars where we finally get to get off our feet and take off our hiking boots!
